About the role#
This internship supports the development of the Heuristic Certification Agent, an AI system designed to help engineers identify certification concerns early in the development lifecycle. You will work alongside software, systems, and aerospace engineers to organize certification knowledge and improve data quality. This role is based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the Summer 2027 term.
What you'll do#
- Research aerospace regulations, certification guidance, and industry standards.
- Organize certification knowledge into structured formats for AI systems.
- Analyze historical certification issues, regulatory findings, and engineering lessons learned.
- Identify recurring patterns used by engineers to recognize certification problems.
- Develop heuristics to help AI identify compliance concerns.
- Explore relationships between certification Canons, Doctrines, Chronicles, and Heuristics.
- Support the development of certification knowledge graphs and structured repositories.
- Create datasets and examples to evaluate Large Language Models and AI agents.
- Develop prompts and evaluation scenarios for AI-assisted certification reviews.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Data Science, Aerospace, Systems, Software, Computer Engineering, or a related STEM major.
- Active enrollment through the completion of the internship.
- Knowledge of basic software tools and principles, such as Python.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to organize complex information and recognize patterns.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Curiosity about complex engineering systems and an interest in AI, machine learning, or Large Language Models.
- Willingness to learn from experienced engineers and challenge existing assumptions.
