About the role#
Raytheon Technologies is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to join the space and airborne optics department in El Segundo, California. This role supports development, integration, and testing across multiple space and airborne programs. You will work alongside junior and senior engineers to design, build, and test space hardware. This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027. Please note that U.S. citizenship is required for this position.
What you'll do#
- Perform mechanical component design on opto-mechanical systems using Creo.
- Support assembly, integration, and test activities within a lab environment.
- Create and revise opto-mechanical designs and engineering drawings.
- Generate assembly instructions and provide build support to technicians.
- Apply design for producibility and manufacturability principles.
- Present your work during peer reviews.
- Research components and materials for the analysis of mechanical assemblies.
- Generate detailed design drawings that incorporate GD&T.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on thermal management, structural optimization, and precision mechanical mounting.
- Manage engineering changes using product data management tools while balancing schedule constraints.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Advanced degree program for Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related STEM field.
- Completion of at least 60 credit hours by the start of the internship.
- Experience in the design and development of mechanical hardware.
- Proficiency in commercial CAD software, specifically Creo.
- Familiarity with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
- Experience with component design, analysis, or the build of space and airborne hardware is preferred.
- Experience leading a design or build team on a project is a plus.
- Knowledge of DFMA principles and modern machining techniques.
