System Protection Engineer Intern - North Coast

About the role#

The System Protection Engineer Intern role provides hands-on training in the fundamentals of transmission and distribution system protection. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will gain exposure to utility protection engineering practices, including system disturbance analysis, equipment evaluation, and the development of protection standards.

What you'll do#

• Support transmission and distribution protection engineering projects and maintenance and operations activities.
• Assist with protection design requirements, documentation for relay settings, and the development of testing procedures.
• Review and analyze system disturbances, relay operations, and operating events.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation, engineering records, and reports.
• Collaborate with engineers, field personnel, and stakeholders to support protection engineering initiatives.
• Receive structured training on protection philosophies, standards, and regulatory requirements.

What you'll need#

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering on a full-time basis at an accredited university.
• Must be continuing your education and returning to school following the internship.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow established engineering processes.
• Interest in power systems and electric utility engineering, with relevant coursework in power systems, protection, or controls.
