System Automation Engineer Intern (Sacramento)

About the role#

As a System Automation Engineer Intern, you will support the Transmission & Substation Engineering Department by contributing to capital investment projects and system reliability improvements. You will work alongside experienced engineers to provide automation engineering for routine projects and maintenance operations. This role involves hands-on engineering, participation in project meetings, and collaboration across various departments including construction, distribution planning, and protection.

What you'll do#

• Identify SCADA deficiencies, prepare substation SCADA topology, and issue automation requirements.
• Program Remote Terminal Units (RTU) and troubleshoot automation equipment malfunctions.
• Assist in supporting new remote access and user authentication applications.
• Determine and issue relay settings for integrated station annunciators and IP/DNP addresses for LAN-connected devices.
• Review construction drawings and store RTU configurations and point lists in the system of records.
• Participate in project walkdowns and engage with vendors for training.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline at an accredited university.
• Must be continuing education toward a degree during or after the internship.
• A cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 or greater.
• Strong programming, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Location: West Sacramento, California.
• Term: Summer 2026.
• Work Modality: Hybrid, with 10% travel expected within the service territory.
• Compensation: $24.52 to $35.37 per hour.
• Status: Full-time, paid internship.
