About the role#
The Grid & Electrification Innovation intern will work within the Applied Technology Services organization to support advanced research and engineering initiatives. You will work alongside experienced engineers and technicians in state-of-the-art laboratories to address complex challenges in electric reliability, distributed energy resources, and system protection. This role involves a mix of technical consultation, energy modeling, equipment prototyping, and laboratory testing.
What you'll do#
- Support staff with technology literature reviews and transmission or distribution technology evaluations.
- Conduct power system modeling, analysis, and engineering studies.
- Assist with laboratory testing for R&D projects related to electric vehicle integration, battery energy storage, and secondary service protection.
- Evaluate battery energy storage systems and analyze solutions for reliability improvements in overhead conductors, underground cables, and transformers.
- Perform microgrid islanding studies and support ad hoc power system analysis.
- Develop project concept papers and research proposals for potential utility and academic partnerships.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar discipline at an accredited university.
- Must be continuing education toward your degree during or after the internship.
- Previous academic or internship exposure to power or energy systems.
- A cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 or greater.
- A valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one at least 30 days prior to the start date.
- Demonstrated interest in areas such as power system equipment testing, power flow modeling, test automation, engineering analytics, power electronics, electric vehicles, and distributed energy resources.
