    About the role#

    The Fire Science Engineer Intern will work within the Applied Technology Services (ATS) organization to support proactive engineering solutions. This role offers hands-on exposure to asset risk management, materials and failure analysis, and electrical engineering through both laboratory and field-based work. You will contribute to investigations involving fire hazards, ignition, and thermal damage related to electrical equipment and hardware.

    What you'll do#

    • Apply engineering principles and scientific theory to perform testing, calculations, and analysis under the direction of senior engineers.
    • Support inspection, failure analysis, and reporting activities related to fire hazards, ignition, and thermal damage.
    • Assist with laboratory and field testing, including the setup and operation of test apparatus and instrumentation.
    • Operate laboratory equipment such as scanning electron microscopes, light microscopes, and micro-hardness testers under supervision.
    • Compile, analyze, and document technical data to support engineering investigations and reports.
    • Prepare periodic progress and productivity reports, including turnaround time and key business metrics.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Environmental, or Electrical Engineering.
    • Must be continuing education towards your degree during or after the internship.
    • Foundational knowledge or coursework in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and fire science.
    • Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, specifically ANSYS FLUENT.
    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.

    • Location: Danville, California.
    • Term: Summer 2026.
    • Modality: Full-time, on-site.
    • Compensation: $24.52 to $35.37 per hour.
    • Note: This position does not provide visa sponsorship.
