About the role#
The Grid Technology Engineering Intern will support the Grid Technology Engineering & Evaluation (GTEE) organization within Applied Technology Services. This role involves working alongside senior staff on advanced transmission and distribution hardware and software validation, real-time power system modeling, and laboratory testing. The position focuses on solving complex engineering challenges related to electric reliability, microgrids, and distributed energy resources.
What you'll do#
- Support senior staff with transmission and distribution equipment testing.
- Conduct power system modeling and analysis.
- Perform Power Hardware in the Loop (PHIL) and Control Hardware in the Loop (CHIL) testing.
- Assist with advanced communication and asset health monitoring.
- Work on distributed energy resource integration, electric vehicle testing, and data fusion, analytics, and automation.
- Contribute to research and development projects involving battery energy storage, microgrid islanding studies, and secondary service protection.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at an accredited university.
- Must be continuing education towards a degree during or after the internship.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Preferred: 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative and major GPA.
- Preferred: EIT or FE certification.
- Preferred: Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation.
- Preferred: Experience with utility modeling software such as CYME, PSCAD, RSCAD, PSS/E, or PSLF.
- Preferred: Programming experience in National Instruments Labview, Python, or Matlab.
