About the role#
This internship supports process engineering activities within the Material Handling function at Nucor Steel Brandenburg. You will focus on shipping, material processing, contractor oversight, and continuous improvement initiatives. Safety is the priority in this role, and you will be expected to uphold all safety policies and housekeeping standards at all times.
What you'll do#
- Support process engineering initiatives within material handling, including shipping and material processing workflows.
- Identify, scope, and document process improvement opportunities.
- Collect and analyze operational data to find bottlenecks, safety risks, or efficiency gains.
- Coordinate and oversee contractor performance for material handling and shipping tasks.
- Develop standard work, process documentation, and continuous improvement recommendations.
- Partner with logistics, operations, and maintenance teams to implement and validate improvements.
- Initiate and lead safety practices throughout the plant.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Industrial, Mechanical, Process, or Chemical Engineering.
- Rising junior or senior standing.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to work in and around shipping and material processing areas.
- Coursework or project experience in process improvement methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen.
- Experience with material handling, logistics, or manufacturing operations.
- Familiarity with contractor management, process mapping tools, CAD software, or ERP systems like Oracle EBS.
