About the role#
As a Materials Characterization Intern, you will join the Advanced Technologies research and development organization in Lynchburg, Virginia. You will assist with multiple nuclear development projects, including space and terrestrial nuclear applications. This is a full-time, paid summer 2027 internship.
What you'll do#
- Develop new methodologies to characterize the chemistry, microstructure, or properties of inorganic materials.
- Take ownership of characterization methods to improve standard operating procedures, enhance quality, or expand current capabilities.
- Support research and development programs by analyzing various materials.
- Reduce, analyze, and present data generated from material characterization.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program in a technical field, such as Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
- An enthusiastic attitude toward learning new technologies and tackling challenges.
- Exposure to or experience with ceramic, metal, or composite materials.
- Familiarity with at least one characterization approach, such as ICP-MS, TGA, FTIR, LECO-OCNHS, SEM, XRD, CT, BET SA, EDS, EBSD, Pycnometry, or PSA.

- This role is based on-site at the Advanced Technologies Office in Lynchburg, Virginia.
- The internship term is Summer 2027.
- Compensation is $25.05 to $31.83 per hour.
- A housing stipend is available for those who meet eligibility requirements.
