About the role#
BWXT is seeking a Welding Engineering Intern for our Barberton, Ohio facility for the Summer 2027 term. This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship lasting 10-12 weeks. You will work alongside our manufacturing and operational teams to support welding engineering projects and shop floor functions. At the end of the program, you will present your completed projects to our leadership team.
What you'll do#
- Support welding engineering projects, process improvements, and shop floor operations.
- Learn and carry out basic contract welding engineering duties.
- Lead 5S and process improvement projects for specific shop operations.
- Assist with welding procedure development, interpretation, and system audits.
- Troubleshoot welding equipment and apply process knowledge to shop floor challenges.
- Create job specific aids, weld instructions, and checklists.
- Conduct operational efficiency projects and support data collection for weld metrics.
What you'll need#
- Current full-time enrollment in an accredited university or college pursuing a degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, or Manufacturing Engineering Technology with a welding emphasis.
- Completion of at least 2 years of relevant course work.
- Knowledge of basic arc welding processes, including GTAW, SMAW, SAW, and GMAW.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong technical problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- You must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
- Prior internship experience and knowledge of robotics or automated processes are preferred.
