About the role#
This summer internship offers an opportunity to work with the System Protection Engineering Department at Nebraska Public Power District. You will assist experienced engineering staff with technical tasks related to protection, controls, and automation. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Columbus, Nebraska, running from May through August 2027.
What you'll do#
Your work will focus on two main areas: system protection and controls automation. You will help specify protection schemes, recommend relays, and perform calculations for fault current, ground potential rise, and relay settings. You will also assist with analyzing system disturbances and locating faults.
In the area of controls and automation, you will gain experience with:
- Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming
- Human Machine Interface (HMI) development
- Intra-substation communication and networking
- Reviewing electrical schematics, control panels, and wiring diagrams
- Developing trip-checking procedures
- Equipment procurement, startup, and operational support
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate student in an electrical engineering program at an accredited college or university
- Completion of at least your sophomore year of college

- Location: Columbus, Nebraska
- Term: Summer 2027 (May through August)
- Work Modality: On-site
- Compensation: $27.61 to $29.58 per hour, plus a $1,000 housing stipend
- Travel: Up to 25% travel may be required, typically within Nebraska with minimal overnight stays
