About the role#
The Senior Extern to RN Program provides nursing students with hands-on experience at Nationwide Children's Hospital. You will work directly with patients and families under the guidance of an RN. This is a paid position for students entering their senior year of nursing school.
What you'll do#
- Provide basic supportive care for nutrition, mobility, and elimination.
- Collect, document, and report vital signs like temperature, pulse, and blood pressure.
- Assist with patient positioning, procedures, and minor specimen collection.
- Use therapeutic communication to monitor the physical and psychological needs of patients.
- Document care in the electronic health record while maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Identify your own learning needs and participate in required educational workshops.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as an incoming senior nursing student in an ACEN, CCNE, or CNEA accredited program.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Current CPR certification (BLS for Healthcare Provider).
- Ability to work 16 or 24 hours per week.
- Two clinical instructor references.

- The program runs through Winter and Spring 2027.
- This is an on-site, part-time position.
