About the role#
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is seeking an intern to join the Power Systems Engineering Center. You will focus on modern power systems with high levels of inverter-based resources. This role involves performing real-time modeling and simulation using large-scale digital tools at the Flatirons Campus in Boulder, Colorado.
What you'll do#
- Provide technical analysis for power electronics and control systems, including battery energy storage and large industrial drives.
- Build power systems with real-time EMT simulation while integrating GTFPGA or GTSOC units.
- Integrate, test, and use user-written black box models in PSCAD and RSCAD for solar inverters and battery systems.
- Evaluate studies regarding the impact of high percentages of inverter-based resources on power systems.
- Write and publish analysis results in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a full-time student in a bachelor's, master's, or PhD program in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering.
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
- Experience with EMT software tools such as PSCAD, RSCAD, or MATLAB/Simulink.
- Knowledge of modeling and control for inverter-based resources.
- Understanding of co-simulation between PSCAD-RSCAD and PSS/E-PSCAD, as well as RTDS modeling and HIL testing.
- Ability to present technical results to diverse audiences.
