About the role#
The Integrated Carbon Conversion Processes group is seeking a graduate intern to assist in developing a digital twin for an experimental biological and thermocatalytic conversion platform. The project aims to create a virtual representation of key unit operations to enable real-time monitoring, dynamic simulation, and predictive analytics for biomass and waste conversion processes.
What you'll do#
- Design and implement process models representing biomass conversion, upgrading, and separation units.
- Integrate sensor data and historical process data into the digital twin architecture.
- Develop simulation tools and dashboards for visualization, control, and scenario analysis.
- Contribute to model validation using pilot-scale data and assist with experimental feedback loops.
- Document system architecture, modeling workflows, and project assumptions to ensure reproducibility and team collaboration.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a master's degree, or currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Chemical Engineering, Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
- Experience programming in Python and/or C++.
- Experience modeling chemical reactors.
- Exposure to artificial intelligence or machine learning methods.

- This position is based in Golden, Colorado, with remote work options available.
- This is a full-time, year-round internship role.
- Employment is subject to Department of Energy access restrictions and requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification card.
