The Integrated Carbon Conversion Processes (ICCP) group is seeking a graduate intern to support the development of a digital twin for an experimental biological and thermocatalytic conversion platform. You will work alongside senior process engineers, modelers, and data scientists to create a virtual representation of key unit operations. This project focuses on enabling real-time monitoring, dynamic simulation, and predictive analytics to support the production of biofuels and bioproducts.
What you'll do#
- Design and implement process models representing biomass conversion, upgrading, and separation units.
- Integrate sensor data and historical process data into the digital twin architecture.
- Develop simulation tools and dashboards for visualization, control, and scenario analysis.
- Contribute to model validation using pilot-scale data and experimental feedback loops.
- Document assumptions, system architecture, and modeling workflows to ensure reproducibility and team collaboration.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a master's degree, or currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Chemical Engineering, Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
- Experience programming in Python and/or C++.
- Experience modeling chemical reactors.
- Exposure to artificial intelligence or machine learning methods.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, year-round internship based in Golden, Colorado, with both remote and on-site work modalities available.
- Employment is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions, including the ability to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card and a favorable background investigation.
- Candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test, which includes testing for marijuana as required by federal law.
