About the role#
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is seeking a graduate intern to join the Building Technologies and Science Center in Los Angeles. This role focuses on evaluating innovative electrical upgrades to rooftop unit technologies to enhance energy resilience and reduce conversion losses. The position is hybrid, and the selected candidate must reside in California for the duration of the internship.
What you'll do#
- Model building energy systems, energy storage systems, and integrate these with Department of Energy prototypical building models.
- Design control algorithms and conduct simulation studies under various utility rate structures.
- Perform data analytics and conduct in-depth technoeconomic analysis.
- Work independently and collaborate with project team members to advance research goals.
- Communicate research findings and contribute to technical documentation or research publications.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a full-time student in a master’s degree program at an accredited institution.
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Degree or coursework in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Computer Science.
- Demonstrated knowledge of building sciences, building energy systems, thermal or electrochemical energy storage, and building controls.
- Experience in the modeling, simulation, and control of building energy systems.
- Proficiency in modeling tools such as EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, or Modelica.
