This graduate internship within the Building Technologies and Science Center focuses on evaluating innovative electrical upgrades to Rooftop Unit (RTU) technologies. The role involves research into enhancing energy resilience and reducing energy conversion losses through first-principle modeling and analysis.
What you'll do#
- Model building energy systems and energy storage systems, including integration with DOE prototypical building models.
- Design control algorithms and conduct simulation studies under various utility rate structures.
- Perform data analytics and conduct in-depth technoeconomic analysis.
- Collaborate with project team members while maintaining the ability to work independently.
- Communicate research findings and contribute to technical documentation or research publications.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a full-time student in a master’s degree program at an accredited institution.
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
- Academic background in Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental, or Civil Engineering, or Computer Science.
- Demonstrated knowledge of building sciences, thermal or electrochemical energy storage, and building controls.
- Practical experience in the modeling, simulation, and control of building energy systems.
- Proficiency in simulation tools such as EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, or Modelica.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid hybrid position based in Los Angeles, California.
- The successful candidate must reside in California for the duration of the internship.
- This is a rolling, fixed-term internship.
