About the role#
The Water Power Technology Validation group researches ways to advance marine energy technologies, including wave, tidal, ocean current, riverine, and ocean thermal gradient energy. As an intern, you will work on marine energy applications while developing your core technical skills. There is potential to publish your contributions and work completed during the internship.
What you'll do#
- Assist in developing simulations for power electronic converter topologies.
- Perform design calculations for component sizing of passive circuit elements, operating specifications, and evaluating off-the-shelf converter solutions.
- Implement control methods for power capture and power conditioning, such as maximum power point tracking.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor’s degree earned within the past 12 months.
- Current enrollment in a master’s degree or PhD program in power electronics or power systems.
- A minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Experience with Matlab and Matlab SimuLink or relevant real-time simulation software.
- Fundamental knowledge of power electronics design or electric drivetrain technology.
- Fundamental knowledge of typical control methods and their implementation.
- Hardware-in-the-loop software and testing experience is preferred.

- This role is based on-site in Boulder, Colorado.
- This is a full-time, fixed-term internship.
- This position is paid.
- Employment is conditional on the ability to obtain work authorization and gain access to the facility as required by the Department of Energy, including a background investigation for a federal Personal Identity Verification card.
- A pre-employment drug test is required.
