Apply NowAbout the role#
The Grid Automation and Control Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is seeking a graduate intern to support research into the modeling and simulation of modern power grids. As the electric grid transforms due to the growth of large data centers, this role focuses on data center electrical modeling, EMT/phasor simulation, and stability analysis. You will contribute to projects addressing reliability challenges in high-load, high-inverter-based resource (IBR) grids.
What you'll do#
- Develop phasor-domain and EMT models for hyperscale data centers to support power system planning and operational studies.
- Conduct model validation using real-world event data and commercial simulation tools such as PSSE, PSLF, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, and PSCAD.
- Document research results through reports, presentations, and briefings for internal teams, DOE sponsors, and external partners.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, IEEE transactions, conference proceedings, and technical reports.
- Apply knowledge of IBR integration challenges and power system stability concepts to ongoing research.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a full-time student in a master's degree program in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- Hands-on experience developing user-defined dynamic models of IBRs in PSS®E or PSLF.
- Strong understanding of small-signal, transient, and voltage stability.
- Experience with parameter identification for dynamic electrical devices.
Location & details#
- Location: Golden, Colorado.
- Term: Summer 2025.
- Modality: On-site and remote options available.
- Employment type: Full-time (40 hours per week).
