About the role#
The Minnesota Historical Society offers an editorial internship supporting the MNHS Press, the online encyclopedia MNopedia, and the quarterly magazine Minnesota History. This role provides exposure to the full publishing lifecycle, from manuscript acquisition and evaluation to production and final proofing. Interns will work across these three departments, observing how editors diagnose text issues and collaborate with authors.
What you'll do#
- Evaluate book proposals and manuscripts while participating in development discussions.
- Assist with copyediting, proofing, and fact-checking for both book titles and magazine articles.
- Conduct photo research for Press titles and Minnesota History.
- Manage metadata, log article submissions, and write book notes for the Take Three feature.
- Identify broken links, research images, and write an entry for MNopedia.
- Attend editorial, acquisitions, launch, and production meetings to observe publishing workflows.
- Handle administrative tasks such as mailings, database maintenance, and setting up informational interviews.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student, or graduation within the past 12 months.
- A degree or progress toward a degree in English, history, anthropology, journalism, American studies, or a related field.
- Ability to research, write, and communicate clearly.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks under different supervisors.
- Willingness to learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, FileMaker Pro, and internal library procedures.
Location & details#
- This position is based in St Paul, Minnesota.
- The term runs from January 19, 2027, to May 23, 2027.
- This is a part-time role requiring 15 hours per week, typically scheduled in two 5-hour shifts.
- Interns must participate in three in-person professional development seminars and deliver a final presentation at the end of the term.
