About the role#
The Minnesota Historical Society offers an editorial internship within the MNHS Press, MNopedia, and the quarterly magazine Minnesota History. This role provides exposure to the full publishing process, from manuscript acquisition and evaluation to final production. Interns observe and contribute to editorial, acquisitions, and production meetings while gaining experience in diverse publishing tasks. The program includes three mandatory professional development seminars and a final presentation at the end of the term.
What you'll do#
- Evaluate book proposals and manuscripts while participating in development discussions.
- Assist with copyediting, proofing, and fact-checking manuscripts, articles, and endnotes.
- Conduct photo research for Press titles and MNopedia entries.
- Write and review metadata for publications.
- Manage administrative tasks including logging article submissions, database maintenance, and mailings.
- Identify broken links, fact-check, and write an entry for MNopedia.
- Write and compile book notes for the Take Three feature in Minnesota History.
- Complete an editing test and conduct informational interviews with staff.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program, or graduation within the last 12 months.
- A degree or progress toward a degree in English, history, anthropology, journalism, American studies, or a related field.
- Proficiency or a willingness to learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and FileMaker Pro.
- Strong skills in research, writing, and clear communication.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and coordinate work across different supervisors.
- Strong attention to detail.

- This position is based on-site in St Paul, Minnesota.
- The term runs from January 19, 2027, to May 23, 2027.
- This is a part-time role requiring 15 hours per week.
- The position is paid at $17.02 per hour.
