About the role#
The Mercy STL Nurse Externship provides nursing students with hands-on clinical experience during the winter break. This is a paid, full-time position where you will work alongside experienced nurses to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice. The program runs from December 21, 2026, through January 15, 2027.
What you'll do#
As a nurse extern, you will perform clinical procedures and nonclinical support tasks within your defined scope. You will work under the direction of an RN to assist in the individualized care of patients. You will also work cooperatively as part of the healthcare team to support patient wellness. Clinical exposure includes:
- IV therapy and phlebotomy
- Foley, NG tube, and tracheostomy care
- Point-of-care testing and specimen collection
- Ostomy care and simple dressing changes
- Head-to-toe assessments
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an approved registered nurse or practical nurse school of nursing
- Completion of at least two semesters of nursing school by the start of the program
- Completion of at least one clinical rotation
