    About the role#

    The Program for Initial Resettlement Intern supports newly arrived refugees in San Diego by assisting with essential integration services. This role works closely with Resettlement Caseworkers to help families navigate local systems, access resources, and establish their lives in the community. This is an unpaid internship for Fall 2026.

    What you'll do#

    • Drive and accompany clients to appointments, including the DMV, health check-ups, Social Security offices, and school enrollments.
    • Assist Caseworkers with airport pickups for new arrivals.
    • Help clients open bank accounts and manage financial transactions.
    • Support clients with service enrollment, both in-person and remotely.
    • Develop educational guides and learning materials for client use, such as healthcare navigation and local community resources.
    • Assist with setting up apartments for arriving families, including shopping for necessary household items.
    • Accompany clients on public transit to teach navigation of the San Diego bus and metro systems.
    • Provide office support, including preparing case files, maintaining supplies, and corresponding on behalf of clients.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or master’s program in Education, International Relations, International Development, Social Work, or a related field.
    • Fluency in English.
    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including basic Excel functions.
    • A valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and current insurance, with the ability to travel regularly in the area.
    • A strong interest in working with diverse, low-income populations.
    • Ability to remain calm and adaptable in a professional environment.
    • Preferred: Proficiency in Farsi, Dari, Kiswahili, Arabic, or Russian.
    • Preferred: At least one year of related work or volunteer experience with a non-profit.

    Location & details#

    • Location: San Diego, California (On-site at the El Cajon office).
    • Term: Fall 2026.
    • Schedule: Monday through Friday, between 8:30am and 4:30pm PST. Interns may choose their hours within this window.
    • Compensation: This is an unpaid internship.
