About the role#
The Asylum Seeker Legal Team Intern supports immigration legal staff in providing services to asylum seekers and other immigrants. This role involves direct client interaction, administrative support, and legal research within a multicultural environment. This is an unpaid, on-site internship based in New York, New York.
What you'll do#
- Assist immigration staff in providing services to clients, including scheduling legal consultations.
- Draft immigration applications under the direct supervision of an immigration attorney.
- Perform research on various immigration issues.
- Conduct follow-up communication with clients.
- Provide translation and interpretation services when necessary.
- Maintain client files and perform administrative duties to ensure records are accurate and up to date.
- Adhere to organizational policies regarding client privacy and confidentiality.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate student in social sciences, international relations, or a related field, or a current law student.
- Proficiency in Spanish is required.
- Minimum commitment of 15 hours per week, with a preference for candidates available for 35+ hours.
- Competency in Microsoft Office, data tracking, and file management.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work independently.
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment with sensitivity to diverse beliefs and values.
