    About the role#

    The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program designed to prepare newly arrived refugee youth for success in the New York City public school system. The Photography Teaching Assistant Intern supports the lead photography instructor in facilitating classes for students aged 5–21. This role focuses on helping youth develop creative skills and document their personal experiences through photography in a supportive educational environment.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist the lead photography instructor in facilitating weekly lessons on camera operation, composition, lighting, and storytelling.
    • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students, including troubleshooting technical issues and providing feedback on their work.
    • Accompany the group on photography field trips to provide supervision and project assistance.
    • Manage and maintain photography equipment, including cameras, tripods, and lighting gear.
    • Assist with digital file management, including organizing, labeling, and archiving student images.
    • Support project documentation and exhibit planning as needed.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently enrolled in or a graduate of a college or master’s program in Photography, Art, Design, Media Studies, or a related field.
    • At least 1 year of coursework in photography or visual arts.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience using DSLR cameras.
    • A portfolio of 5–10 original images demonstrating a strong understanding of composition, lighting, and visual storytelling.
    • Fluency in written and verbal English.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and Adobe Creative Suite.
