    About the role#

    The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program designed to help newly arrived refugee youth prepare for the New York City public school system. The Photography Teaching Assistant Intern will support the lead instructor during photography classes and a collaborative photo project. This role focuses on helping students develop creative skills and document their personal experiences in a supportive, educational environment.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist the lead instructor in facilitating weekly lessons on camera operation, composition, lighting, and storytelling.
    • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students during class activities, including technical troubleshooting and feedback.
    • Plan and lead photography learning sessions under the supervision of the lead instructor.
    • Manage and maintain photography equipment, including cameras, tripods, and lighting.
    • Handle file management tasks, such as organizing, labeling, and archiving student images.
    • Assist students with photo editing software to enhance their work.
    • Accompany the group on photography field trips to provide supervision and project support.
    • Document project activities and assist with exhibit planning and coordination.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently enrolled in or a graduate of a college or master’s program in Photography, Art, Design, Media Studies, or a related field.
    • At least 1 year of coursework in photography or visual arts.
    • Minimum of 2 years of experience using DSLR cameras.
    • A portfolio of 5-10 original images demonstrating an understanding of composition, lighting, and visual storytelling.
    • Fluency in written and verbal English.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and Adobe Creative Suite.
    • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
    • Must have valid US work authorization.
