Healthcare & Benefits Navigation Intern

About the role#

The Healthcare & Benefits Navigation Intern supports the resettlement of refugees and immigrants in New York City. This role focuses on helping clients access public benefits and healthcare services, ensuring they can navigate complex systems as they rebuild their lives. This is an unpaid, full-time, on-site position with rolling start dates.

What you'll do#

• Support screening and enrollment activities for benefit programs such as Medicaid, NYC Care, SNAP, WIC, FairFares, and IDNYC.
• Accompany clients to public benefits appointments and assist in scheduling medical and dental appointments.
• Develop educational materials to improve client knowledge of public benefits systems and deliver workshops as needed.
• Maintain thorough and accurate case file documentation, including digital file management and data tracking in spreadsheets.
• Collaborate with the Health & Wellness team to update the Community Resources Guide.
• Provide translation and interpretation services when necessary while maintaining client confidentiality and privacy.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a post-secondary institution or graduation within the last 2 years.
• Academic background in International Relations, Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, or related social sciences.
• A strong desire to assist refugees and migrant communities in New York.
• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and maintain high attention to detail.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
• Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Proficiency in Haitian Creole, Arabic, Spanish, French, or Russian is desired but not required.
