About the role#
The Healthcare & Benefits Navigation Intern supports the resettlement of refugees and immigrants in New York City. This role focuses on assisting newly arrived individuals in accessing essential public services and healthcare systems. Interns work alongside Healthcare Benefit Navigators to ensure clients can successfully navigate complex systems to rebuild their lives.
What you'll do#
- Support screening and enrollment activities for benefit programs such as Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, and IDNYC.
- Accompany clients to public benefits appointments and assist in scheduling medical and dental visits.
- Develop educational materials to help clients understand and access public benefits systems.
- Maintain thorough and accurate case file documentation in program folders and spreadsheets.
- Collaborate on the development and updating of a Community Resources Guide through desk research and outreach.
- Provide interpretation and translation support when necessary.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a post-secondary institution or graduation within the last 2 years.
- Academic background in International Relations, Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, or a related field.
- A strong desire to help refugees and migrant communities.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and maintain high attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
- Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and file management.
- Proficiency in languages such as Haitian Creole, Arabic, Spanish, French, or Russian is highly desired but not required.
