The International Rescue Committee is seeking an Immigration & Citizenship Intern to support our legal team in Elizabeth, New Jersey. This is an unpaid, full-time, on-site internship available on a rolling basis. The role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in immigration law, refugee resettlement, and social services while working directly with a diverse client base.
What you'll do#
- Assist immigration staff in preparing applications for adjustment of status, citizenship, family petitions, work permits, and other immigration benefits.
- Meet with clients to review applications, gather necessary documentation, and follow up on case requirements.
- Communicate with clients via phone or mail regarding their application status.
- Support procedural tasks such as responding to requests for evidence and conducting follow-up advocacy.
- Help strategize and execute community outreach initiatives, including citizenship workshops and informational forums.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records within the online immigration database.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a JD candidate or law student is preferred; college students will also be considered.
- Fluency in Haitian Creole, Spanish, Arabic, Dari, or Ukrainian is strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with refugees, asylees, and other immigrants.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a culturally diverse team.
- Familiarity with the mission of the International Rescue Committee.
- Prior experience in immigration is considered a plus.
