About the role#
The Immigration & Citizenship Intern supports the immigration team in helping refugees, asylees, and other immigrants navigate the process of applying for immigration benefits. This role involves direct client interaction, document preparation, and administrative support for the immigration program. This is an unpaid, full-time internship based in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
What you'll do#
- Help immigration staff prepare applications for adjustment of status, citizenship, family petitions, work permits, and travel documents.
- Meet with clients to review their applications, gather necessary information, and follow up on their petitions.
- Communicate with clients via telephone or mail regarding their application status.
- Assist with procedural tasks such as responding to requests for evidence and conducting follow-up advocacy.
- Plan and execute community outreach efforts, including citizenship workshops and informational forums.
- Maintain accurate client data within the online immigration database and manage filing and documentation tasks.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a JD candidate or law student is preferred, though college students will be considered.
- Fluency in Haitian Creole, Spanish, Arabic, Dari, or Ukrainian is strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse client base.
- Familiarity with the mission of the International Rescue Committee.
- Ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse team environment.
- Prior experience in immigration work is a plus.
