The Financial Capabilities Intern supports the IRC in New Jersey by assisting newly arrived refugees and immigrants in building financial self-sufficiency. This role focuses on increasing financial literacy, providing coaching, and helping clients navigate U.S. financial systems, including banking, credit, budgeting, and taxes. This is an unpaid, full-time, on-site internship.
What you'll do#
- Provide one-on-one financial coaching and counseling to program participants.
- Conduct budgets and financial surveys with clients.
- Facilitate monthly financial literacy workshops.
- Accompany clients to bank appointments.
- Track client progress and case notes using spreadsheets and ETO software.
- Communicate effectively with clients in person and by phone.
- Adhere to organizational policies regarding client confidentiality and privacy.
What you'll need#
- Must be based in the U.S.
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or have graduated within the last 2 years.
- Minimum of a high school degree.
- Bilingual ability is required, with Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred. Proficiency in Dari, Pashto, Arabic, or French is also an asset.
- Basic digital literacy skills.
- Availability for a minimum of 15 hours per week.
- Preferred background in personal financial management, counseling, or coaching.
- Academic majors of interest include Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Accounting, Human Resources, or Communications.
