About the role#
The Financial Capabilities intern supports the IRC in New Jersey by helping refugees and immigrants build financial stability. This program focuses on increasing financial literacy, providing coaching, and helping participants access financial services. You will assist clients as they navigate banking, credit, budgeting, and tax systems to support their long-term self-sufficiency.
What you'll do#
- Provide one-on-one financial coaching for clients.
- Conduct budgets and financial surveys.
- Facilitate monthly financial literacy workshops.
- Accompany clients to bank appointments.
- Track client progress and notes in spreadsheets and internal software.
- Communicate with clients in person and over the phone.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a post-secondary institution or graduation within the last two years.
- A high school degree.
- Proficiency in digital literacy.
- Bilingual ability is required, with Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred. Proficiency in Dari, Pashto, Arabic, or French is also a plus.
- Ability to commit to at least 15 hours per week.
- Experience in personal financial management or counseling is preferred.

- This is an unpaid internship.
- Work is on-site.
- The role is full-time in terms of weekly hours, with a rolling start date.
