About the role#
This internship provides exposure to engineering elements in open wheel racing, including aerodynamics, engine management, data analysis, and electronics. You will work under the guidance of engineering leadership on projects determined by organizational priorities and your own interests. This is a part-time, paid position for the Summer 2027 season.
What you'll do#
- Support engineering projects under the direction of leadership.
- Assist engine technicians with collecting engine control unit (ECU) data at race events.
- Write programs to increase the efficiency of data review.
- Support the engineering safety group by downloading crash data and taking accident photos during events.
- Collaborate across departments, including with the INDYCAR Timing and Innovation group.
- Complete short-term projects to gain exposure to the motorsports industry.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program for electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering.
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Integrity, honesty, accountability, and the ability to build trust.
- Capacity to deliver creative solutions to complex problems.
- Cultural competence and the ability to work in a diverse environment.
- Alignment with Penske Entertainment core values.
- Experience with Formula SAE or similar programs is preferred.
- Knowledge of engine operations and vehicle electronics is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Indianapolis, Indiana.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Term: May through August 2027.
- Schedule: Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours and travel required for race weekends and key events.
- Physical requirements: Must have the stamina for long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, and the ability to work in various weather conditions and loud environments.
