About the role#
As a Back-End Software Engineering Intern on the NetTools Network Automation team, you will work on systems that manage the network infrastructure for IBM Cloud. You will contribute to production-grade services that help network engineers provision, configure, and monitor global data centers. This role involves direct collaboration with the team building the Axon/NCS platform and the SSOT/Hivemind data systems.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to back-end Python microservices for the Axon/NCS project, focusing on Day-0 and Day-2 automation workflows.
- Design and implement unit and integration tests to improve the platform's automated test coverage.
- Develop and improve interfaces between NCS/Axon and the SSOT/Hivemind data platforms to ensure reliable data consumption.
- Refactor code components and improve Docker container configuration practices to reduce technical debt.
- Write operational runbooks and onboarding documentation.
- Track work in Jira, attend agile ceremonies, participate in code reviews, and share progress with cross-functional stakeholders.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
- Experience with back-end development in Python, including data structures, JSON/YAML, and REST API design.
- Familiarity with version control using Git, including branching and pull requests.
- Fundamentals of containerization with Docker.
- Understanding of REST APIs and HTTP.
- Aptitude for automated testing, including unit or integration tests.
- Working knowledge of Bash, Ansible, or other configuration management tools.
- Familiarity with template engines like Jinja2 or Helm.
- Exposure to container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes, OpenShift, or Docker Compose.
- Basic understanding of networking concepts like IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, switching, or routing.
- Working knowledge of tools like Grafana, Splunk, Zabbix, JIRA, ServiceNow, GitHub, or Confluence.
