About the role#
HMH is looking for an AI & Automation Development Intern to join our team in Houston for the summer of 2027. This full-time, paid internship focuses on building and testing AI agents and automated workflows. You will work alongside our engineering team to refine digital solutions that improve operational efficiency.
What you'll do#
- Gather business requirements and document process steps, decision points, and expected outcomes.
- Develop, test, and evaluate AI agents and automated workflows.
- Connect approved data sources to support workflow decisions.
- Build workflow logic that combines business rules with AI-generated recommendations.
- Implement human-review and approval steps within workflows.
- Configure automated actions in destination systems.
- Test workflow outputs, data validation, error handling, and exception scenarios.
- Monitor prototypes to identify issues or opportunities for improvement.
- Document solution designs, prompts, test cases, and operating procedures.
- Stay current on developments in AI, agentic systems, and responsible AI practices.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor or Graduate degree program in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or Computer Engineering.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Basic programming knowledge in Python or a similar language.
- Foundational understanding of databases, SQL, APIs, JSON, or software integration concepts.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Professionalism, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic.
- Familiarity with generative AI, large language models, prompt engineering, or machine learning is preferred.
