About the role#
This summer internship provides practical experience within the defense industry. You will work alongside engineers to support the design and construction of nuclear submarines for the United States Navy. The program involves exposure to various engineering groups, including welding laboratories, advanced concepts, and materials engineering. You will contribute to projects such as the Columbia Class design and Virginia Class submarine enhancements.
What you'll do#
- Support pipe and structural welding construction and procedure qualifications.
- Review vendor weld procedure qualifications and repair plans for compliance with Navy specifications.
- Conduct failure analysis, material verification, and literature reviews for new technology.
- Develop procedures for research and development testing and oversee lab testing.
- Manage material requests, including obsolescence and replacements.
- Analyze novel composite components and develop repair procedures for damaged materials.
- Develop databases and maintain specification histories.
- Shadow senior staff to learn different aspects of the welding engineering organization.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time student in a Bachelor or Master of Science program.
- Completed Freshman year prior to the start of the internship.
- Pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil, or Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or Environmental Engineering.
- US citizenship and age 18 or older.
- Ability to pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
- Proficiency with the MS Office suite.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Location & details#
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Commitment: 40 hours per week for at least eight consecutive weeks between May and September 2027.
- Modality: On-site only.
- Locations: Groton, New London, or North Stonington, Connecticut; North Kingstown or Newport, Rhode Island.
- Requirements: Interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation.
