About the role#
The Propulsion Plant and Ship Systems Directorate handles engineering and design for various submarine classes, including the VIRGINIA class. Interns support our work on fluid systems, propulsion plants, and ship systems. You will work alongside senior staff to develop solutions for the United States Navy. This is an on-site, full-time summer internship for 2027.
What you'll do#
- Perform calculations on structures, components, and fluid systems.
- Ensure designs meet all system requirements and specifications.
- Work with the Design workforce, Construction Trades, and Navy representatives to resolve issues or implement new designs.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop new system concepts and arrangements.
- Evaluate new concepts and provide engineering recommendations.
- Assess material conditions or design issues on commissioned submarines or those under construction.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time student in a Bachelor or Master of Science program for Mechanical, Aerospace, Ocean, Chemical, Civil, Nuclear, or Acoustic Engineering.
- Completion of your Freshman year before the start of the internship.
- US citizenship and the ability to pass a background check and medically supervised drug screen.
- Availability to work 40 hours per week for at least eight consecutive weeks between May and September 2027.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- Ability to arrange your own housing and transportation for the duration of the program.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
