About the role#
As a Process Improvement Engineer intern, you will work directly with shipbuilders and continuous improvement professionals at the Groton Shipyard. You will apply data-driven problem-solving methods to real challenges within submarine manufacturing. This role focuses on improving quality, safety, and lead times in a high-mix, low-volume production environment where thousands of unique tasks require complex coordination.
What you'll do#
- Investigate manufacturing processes and gather data to support improvement efforts.
- Facilitate team discussions and collaborate with diverse trades across the organization.
- Learn to apply foundational Lean Six Sigma tools within the unique Electric Boat continuous improvement approach.
- Receive instruction in Lean Six Sigma principles to address production constraints.
- Support projects aimed at lowering costs and enhancing overall performance.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time student pursuing a Bachelor or Master degree in Operations Management, Business Administration, Business Analytics, Organizational Leadership, Industrial Organizational Psychology, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Engineering Management.
- Completion of at least your Freshman year prior to the start of the internship.
- US citizenship and must be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
- Experience in team leadership, collaborative problem solving, or project management.
- Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or Toyota Production Systems is highly desired.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work professionally on difficult tasks.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site, full-time internship located in Groton, CT.
- You must be available to work 40 hours per week for at least eight consecutive weeks between May 2027 and September 2027.
- You are responsible for arranging your own housing and transportation for the duration of the internship.
