About the role#
This internship provides students with exposure to the GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy business. Interns work onsite with customers to support legacy fleet reactors, providing value as part of an outage team to ensure reactors are serviced safely and efficiently. The program begins in January 2027 and includes a mix of training, travel to domestic nuclear refueling outages, and project work at the Wilmington, NC site.
What you'll do#
- Perform maintenance and inspection activities on Boiling Water Reactors.
- Collaborate with experienced Field Service Engineers in a project-based environment.
- Attend entry level technical training.
- Travel to domestic nuclear refueling outages, which may require working 12-hour shifts, 7 days per week when necessary.
- Work as part of high-performance teams to complete safe and error-free work.
- Assist with shorter duration projects at the Wilmington site between outages.
- Use basic hand tools and read equipment manuals, procedures, and work instructions.
- Work in radiation-controlled or radioactively contaminated areas as required.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a full-time undergraduate program with a primary major in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Civil, Environmental Engineering, or Nursing.
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (without rounding).
- Prior internship or co-op experience in manufacturing, industrial, or field engineering environments.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical problems in simple terms.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and climb 10 flights of stairs twice per day.
- Ability to pass a respirator fit test, physical exam, and Fitness for Duty requirements.
- Must possess a valid US driver's license.
- Ability to obtain unescorted access at a commercial nuclear power plant, which includes a comprehensive background investigation.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual as defined by 8 USC 1101(a)(2) and 8 USC 1324b(a)(3).
