About the role#
This is a full-time, paid summer internship based in Phoenix, Arizona. You will work in a laboratory setting focused on bioleaching, which uses microbes to extract copper from minerals. The role provides hands-on experience in microbial culturing and experimental design while supporting daily laboratory operations.
What you'll do#
- Culture, identify, and enhance the growth of key microbial species.
- Process biological samples and operate analytical equipment, including light microscopy.
- Prepare reagents and perform lab tasks like colony counting, staining, and pipetting.
- Apply aseptic techniques and follow safety protocols for chemical handling.
- Navigate Chemical Safety Data Documentation.
- Collaborate with team members to complete daily analytical work and department projects.
- Use hypothesis-driven thinking to support laboratory goals.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a four-year degree program or graduation within the last 12 months in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular cellular biology, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong skills in data analysis and problem solving.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to communicate clearly in both oral and written forms.
- Capability to work well in a team and manage tasks under pressure.
- Prior research experience, particularly in microbiology, is preferred.
