About the role#
As a Nurse Extern at Encompass Health, you will support our rehabilitation team by providing direct patient care. This role is designed for nursing students who want to gain clinical experience while completing their education. You will work on-site in a paid position that emphasizes patient recovery and support.
What you'll do#
- Assist patients with daily activities and body mechanics.
- Monitor patients by obtaining and recording vital signs.
- Communicate changes in a patient's condition or concerns to nurses and therapists.
- Document patient information in medical records.
- Perform procedures such as collecting urine, stool, and sputum samples.
- Review treatments, hygiene, and daily living activities with patients and their families.
- Help patients with feeding and participate in the Therapeutic Dining Group.
- Maintain a clean environment and assist with the care of medical equipment.
What you'll need#
- Active enrollment in a professional Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse program with good academic standing.
- Completion of the first term of nursing courses, including fundamentals of nursing.
- BLS (CPR) certification or the ability to obtain it within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to provide instructor evaluations showing satisfactory performance of fundamental skills.
- Proof of continued enrollment and passing grades each semester.
- Completion of a preceptor tool and core competency assessment at 90 days.
- One year of experience in an inpatient clinical setting is preferred.
