About the role#
The Student Nurse Extern Program is a paid, 10-week summer internship for senior nursing students. You will work alongside a dedicated Registered Nurse preceptor to gain hands-on clinical experience. The program includes 200 to 300 clinical hours where you will refine your nursing skills, critical thinking, and organizational abilities in various practice settings. You should treat this externship as your primary commitment for the summer.
What you'll do#
- Apply the nursing process to deliver direct patient care.
- Assist your preceptor with specific procedures and treatments.
- Seek regular feedback on your assessments, care planning, and evaluation of patient care.
- Communicate effectively with patients, their families, and the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
- Participate in educational activities to grow your professional nursing practice.
- Maintain patient confidentiality while involving families in the care process.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a senior nursing student in an accredited Registered Nurse program.
- Good academic standing.
- Ability to work assigned shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and 12-hour rotations.
- Ability to perform heavy physical work, including moving objects over 100 pounds.
- A professional resume with your expected graduation date.
- An unofficial transcript showing your nursing GPA.
- A personal narrative detailing your expectations for the program and your top 5 preferred units.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, temporary, on-site role for Summer 2027.
- Locations include Rapid City, Spearfish, Sturgis, Deadwood, and Custer, South Dakota.
