About the role#
The Protection & Control Design Engineering team at Dominion Energy is looking for an intern for Summer 2027. You will join the Electric Transmission-Substation Engineering department in Glen Allen, Virginia. This role focuses on the design packages that keep the electric power grid safe and reliable. You will gain experience in how substation designs move from initial scope through construction and final energization.
What you'll do#
- Develop and maintain protection and control design packages for substations.
- Collaborate with engineers, drafters, project managers, relay settings specialists, and field technicians.
- Contribute to active substation projects while learning about technical decisions related to safety, quality, and constructability.
- Participate in site visits and professional networking opportunities.
- Complete a summer project or a technical presentation that connects your coursework to utility operations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
- Rising juniors and seniors are preferred.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- A valid driver's license.
- A foundational understanding of electrical circuits and engineering principles.
- Interest in electric power systems, substations, and energy infrastructure.
- Analytical thinking skills and attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

- This is a full-time, paid internship located on-site in Glen Allen, Virginia.
