About the role#
GM Performance Power Units is hiring a Quality Materials Engineer Intern for the Summer 2027 term. You will support materials engineering activities for Formula 1 power unit components in Concord, North Carolina. This role provides hands-on experience with analytical equipment and laboratory facilities while working with engineers to ensure components meet strict specifications and FIA regulations.
What you'll do#
- Assist with daily quality operations and special projects.
- Use lab instruments like optical and scanning electron microscopy, chemical analysis, and mechanical testing equipment to characterize materials.
- Help with data collection, analysis, and reporting for root cause investigations and process improvements.
- Maintain the materials lab by assisting with equipment calibration and organization.
- Support the creation of material and process specifications and laboratory procedures.
- Work with engineering and manufacturing teams to learn quality processes and ensure compliance with standards.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Completed coursework in materials science and engineering.
- Basic familiarity with CAD software like NX or SolidWorks and data analysis tools such as Excel.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects independently.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
- Ability to work effectively with internal teams and external partners.
- Adaptability to changing business needs.
