About the role#
This summer internship with the Electric Transmission Planning & Strategic Initiatives team focuses on evaluating new technologies to support the bulk electric system. You will work on unconventional solutions to address challenges such as data center load growth and clean energy integration. You will be assigned a mentor and a specific Statement of Work project to guide your research and analysis throughout the term.
What you'll do#
- Perform power system modeling, load flow, dynamic, and small signal studies.
- Conduct electromagnetic transient simulations and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
- Analyze renewable energy integration on transmission and distribution systems.
- Manage power system network model validation and merging.
- Research and develop tools for engineering applications.
- Perform data mining and analytics on infrastructure interdependencies.
- Execute manufacturer evaluations and support material requisitions.
- Complete a project based on a predefined Statement of Work.
- Submit a paper to a relevant conference and present a final Graduate Student Report Out.
What you'll need#
- Bachelor degree in an engineering field.
- Currently enrolled in a Masters or Ph.D. program in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
- Minimum 3.2 GPA.
- Anticipated graduation date of Fall 2027 or later.
- Understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, three-phase power systems, and electric transmission.
- Knowledge of protection principles for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and substations.
- Proficiency with tools such as PSS/E, ASPEN, PSCAD, RSCAD, RTDS, Powerworld, DSATools, TARA, MATLAB, MAXWELL 3D, and SYNERGI.
- Ability to meet NERC certifications.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
