About the role#
Definity is hiring an Articling Student for our Claims Litigation team in Calgary. This 10-month position runs from 2027 to 2028. You will receive mentorship and training while contributing to our legal team in a hybrid work environment.
What you'll do#
You will participate in various stages of the litigation process to gain practical experience. Your responsibilities include:
- Conducting fact investigation and legal research on substantive and procedural issues.
- Drafting legal documents and preparing affidavits.
- Developing a theory of the case and formulating legal arguments.
- Attending motions, examinations for discovery, mediations, and settlement conferences.
- Assisting with trial preparation for the Court of Justice and Superior Court.
- Attending pre-trial conferences.
- Receiving regular feedback to support your development as an advocate.
What you'll need#
We look for individuals who can work independently, manage conflicting priorities, and instill confidence in the lawyers they support. Key requirements include:
- Exceptional analytical, research, and writing skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- High levels of initiative and enthusiasm for advocacy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Word and PowerPoint.
- Coursework in Tort, Legal Research and Writing, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Insurance Law, and Trial Advocacy or Mooting.
