About the role#
The DVM Student Externship provides 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students with hands-on experience in an urgent and primary care clinic environment. This program offers mentorship from experienced doctors and clinical staff, focusing on real-world exposure to diverse medical cases and routine wellness scenarios.
What you'll do#
- Interact with pet parents and assist with client communication.
- Take patient histories and review medical records.
- Perform physical exams.
- Observe the development of treatment plans, including estimate creation and presentation.
- Assist the treatment team with administering medications, SQ fluids, and IV fluids under supervision.
- Observe sample preparation for reference laboratory testing and prepare ear cytology or blood smear samples.
- Assist with procedures such as placing urinary catheters, drawing blood, and using ultrasound equipment under direct supervision.
- Scrub in and assist in surgical procedures under the full supervision of the attending doctor.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills and a commitment to upholding confidentiality standards.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, crouching, and squatting.
- Documentation of medical insurance, rabies vaccine or titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test prior to the start date.
Location & details#
- Location: Brooklyn, New York.
- Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: Minimum of two weeks, up to three weeks depending on school requirements.
- Compensation: This is a paid externship.
- Schedule: Rolling applications are accepted year-round, with schedules determined by school requirements and supervising doctor availability.
