About the role#
The DVM Student Externship program offers 3rd- and 4th-year veterinary students hands-on experience in a mentorship-driven clinic environment. This program provides exposure to a variety of urgent care cases and routine wellness scenarios, allowing students to sharpen clinical skills and explore interests under the guidance of experienced doctors.
What you'll do#
- Interact with pet parents and take patient histories.
- Observe the development, creation, and presentation of treatment plans.
- Perform physical exams and review medical records.
- Assist the treatment team with administering medications, SQ fluids, and IV fluids.
- Observe sample preparation for reference laboratory testing, including ear cytology and blood smear samples.
- Assist with procedures such as placing urinary catheters, drawing blood, and using ultrasound equipment under supervision.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills and a commitment to upholding confidentiality standards.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 40 pounds, bending, crouching, and squatting.
- Proof of medical insurance, rabies vaccine/titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test prior to the start date.

- Location: Brooklyn, New York.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: Paid position.
- Term: Rolling applications, with a minimum duration of two weeks and a maximum of three weeks.
- Schedule: Weekend hours may be required depending on school requirements and the supervising doctor's schedule.
