DVM Student Externship

About the role#

The DVM Student Externship provides 3rd- and 4th-year veterinary students with hands-on experience in a clinic environment. This program offers exposure to a variety of urgent care cases and routine wellness scenarios under the mentorship of experienced doctors and veterinary teams.

What you'll do#

• Interact with pet parents and take patient histories.
• Observe the development of treatment plans, including estimate creation and presentation.
• Assist the treatment team in administering medications, including SQ and IV fluids.
• Perform physical exams and help with ultrasound anatomy identification.
• Draw blood on stable animals from cephalic and saphenous veins.
• Place urinary catheters in male dogs and scrub in to assist with procedures under direct supervision.
• Observe sample preparation for reference laboratory testing and prepare ear cytology or blood smear samples.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, crouching, and squatting.
• Proof of medical insurance, rabies vaccine/titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test.

• Location: Long Island, New York.
• Modality: On-site.
• Term: Rolling applications accepted year-round.
• Commitment: Minimum of two weeks, up to three weeks depending on school requirements.
• Note: This is an unpaid externship for credit; participants are responsible for their own accommodation and transportation.
