DVM Student Externship

About the role#

The DVM Student Externship provides 3rd- and 4th-year veterinary students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a clinic environment. This program offers exposure to a wide array of urgent care cases and routine wellness scenarios under the mentorship of experienced doctors and veterinary teams.

What you'll do#

• Interact with pet parents and take patient histories.
• Observe the development, creation, and presentation of treatment plans.
• Assist the treatment team in administering medications, including SQ and IV fluids.
• Perform physical exams and review medical records.
• Place urinary catheters in male dogs under supervision.
• Draw blood from the Cephalic and Saphenous veins on stable animals under supervision.
• Assist with procedures, including scrubbing in for surgeries and using ultrasound to identify anatomy.
• Prepare and review ear cytology samples and blood smear samples.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication skills and a commitment to upholding confidentiality.
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, crouching, and squatting.
• Proof of medical insurance, rabies vaccine/titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test prior to starting the program.

• Location: Manhattan, NY.
• Work Modality: On-site.
• Term: Rolling applications accepted throughout the year.
• Status: Paid, full-time externship.
• Duration: Minimum of two weeks, up to three weeks based on school requirements.
