About the role#
The DVM Student Externship provides 3rd- and 4th-year veterinary students with hands-on experience in a mentorship-driven clinic environment. This program offers exposure to a wide array of urgent care cases and routine wellness scenarios under the guidance of experienced doctors and veterinary teams.
What you'll do#
- Interact with pet parents and take patient histories.
- Observe the development of treatment plans, including estimate creation and presentation.
- Assist the treatment team with administering medications, SQ fluids, and IV fluids.
- Place urinary catheters in male dogs under supervision.
- Draw blood on stable animals from Cephalic and Saphenous veins under supervision.
- Perform physical exams and review medical records.
- Assist with sample preparation for laboratory testing, including ear cytology and blood smears.
- Scrub in and assist in procedures under the full supervision of a doctor.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills and a commitment to upholding confidentiality standards.
- Capability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, crouching, and squatting.
- Documentation of medical insurance, rabies vaccine or titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test prior to starting the program.

- Location: Manhattan, New York.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: This is a paid externship.
- Term: Rolling applications accepted throughout the year.
- Schedule: Minimum of two weeks up to three weeks, based on school requirements. Weekend hours may be required.
