About the role#
The Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty is seeking a student worker to support its policy and public affairs efforts. This position is designed for students interested in legislative policy, advocacy, public communications, and civic engagement. You will report to the Public Affairs Coordinator and work across multiple program areas to help communicate the mission of the department through research, education, and community engagement.
What you'll do#
- Assist with projects related to policy and public affairs.
- Draft policy briefs, memos, fact sheets, and blogs for internal and external use.
- Conduct research on food insecurity and related fields at the state and federal legislative levels.
- Attend meetings, hearings, and educational sessions to brief staff.
- Maintain and coordinate government relations contact lists.
- Assist with relationship mapping and education priorities for the 2027 Texas legislative session.
- Collaborate with staff to develop creative solutions that increase awareness of programs and initiatives.
- Participate in a pilot student development program to help refine an experiential learning model.
- Provide administrative support as needed.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a Baylor University student pursuing a degree in a field related to civic engagement and advocacy, such as political science, social work, public relations, communication, public health, or professional writing and rhetoric.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience in editing and research is preferred.
- Familiarity with government, food insecurity, and domestic poverty is preferred.
- Experience writing memos, fact sheets, and policy briefs is a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: Waco, Texas (On-site at the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty offices).
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Schedule: 10 to 20 hours per week, primarily between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Compensation: This is a paid position.
