About the role#
The Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty is seeking a student worker to support policy and public affairs efforts. This position is designed for students interested in legislative policy, advocacy, public communications, and civic engagement. You will report to the Public Affairs Coordinator and work with staff to communicate the mission of the department through research, education, and community engagement.
What you'll do#
- Assist with projects related to policy and public affairs.
- Draft policy briefs, memos, fact sheets, and blogs for internal and external use.
- Conduct research on food insecurity, economic insecurity, rural and urban poverty, and agricultural trends at state and federal legislative levels.
- Attend meetings, hearings, and educational sessions to brief staff.
- Maintain and coordinate government relations contact lists.
- Assist with relationship mapping and education priorities for the 2027 Texas legislative session.
- Participate in a pilot student development program to help test and refine an experiential learning model.
- Provide administrative support and collaborate on creative solutions to increase awareness of department programs.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at Baylor University in a field related to civic engagement and advocacy, such as political science, social work, public relations, communication, public health, or professional writing.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience in research and editing is preferred.
- Familiarity with domestic government, food insecurity, and poverty is preferred.
- Experience writing memos, fact sheets, and policy briefs is a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: Waco, Texas (On-site at the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty offices).
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Schedule: 10-20 hours per week, primarily between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Compensation: $14-$17 per hour.
