About the role#
Barr Engineering Co. is seeking a GIS student to join the Salt Lake City team. This is a full-time, paid internship available for summer 2027 or winter 2027. You will support project teams by creating report figures, managing databases, and performing spatial data analysis. The role involves working both independently and collaboratively with GIS specialists to meet project requirements.
What you'll do#
- Create clear and accurate maps and figures for project reports and presentations using ArcGIS Pro.
- Perform georeferencing, digitizing, and analysis of raster and vector data with standard Esri ArcGIS extensions.
- Maintain and organize geospatial databases to ensure data integrity and accessibility.
- Review and verify cartographic outputs and data for completeness and accuracy.
- Work with project teams to deliver results.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, or a related field.
- Completion of at least four GIS courses.
- At least one full-time semester of coursework remaining after the internship ends.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.
- Experience with Esri ArcGIS for Desktop 10.x, ArcGIS Pro, and Google Earth.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- An organized, detail-oriented approach to tasks.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

- This position is based in Salt Lake City, Utah.
- Work modality includes on-site and hybrid options.
- The internship lasts approximately three months. Start and end dates are flexible to accommodate academic schedules.
- You may be required to travel and adjust your schedule to meet project needs.
