About the role#
Barr Engineering Co. is hiring a process engineering intern for the summer of 2027. You will join the Engineering and Design business unit to work with multidisciplinary teams on mineral and chemical process projects. These projects involve base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal, chemicals, and fuels. This is a paid, full-time, hybrid position.
What you'll do#
- Conduct process design, analysis, and detailed mass and energy balance modeling.
- Develop process flow diagrams along with piping and instrumentation diagrams.
- Create technical reports and equipment specifications.
- Estimate capital and operating costs for projects.
- Size process piping and equipment.
- Collaborate with team members and clients to align technical work with project objectives.
- Participate in laboratory and pilot plant testing.
What you'll need#
- Ongoing enrollment in a chemical, metallurgy, minerals processing, or materials science engineering degree program.
- At least one full-time semester of coursework remaining after the internship concludes.
- Completion of two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and PDF editing software.
- A current, valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Ability to work in industrial environments, including construction sites with rough terrain and moving machinery.

- This internship is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, or Ann Arbor, Michigan.
- The role is hybrid, requiring time in the office and at home.
- The position runs for three months during the summer of 2027.
