About the role#
Barr Engineering Co. is seeking an intern for the Summer 2027 term to join our Assessment and Remediation business unit in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is a full-time, paid internship focused on environmental and geological projects. You will work on evaluating and remediating contaminated sites, contributing to both field investigations and office-based technical tasks.
What you'll do#
- Assist with on-site investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor.
- Prepare drilling logs, geologic maps, cross-sections, and technical reports.
- Coordinate field activities and logistics, including contractor oversight and equipment preparation.
- Analyze environmental data and contribute to the development of remediation approaches.
- Produce clear field notes, chain-of-custody and data summaries, and draft report sections.
- Participate in fieldwork that may require travel and working in outdoor conditions or industrial facilities.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a third- or fourth-year student in geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering, or a related major.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0.
- At least one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after the internship.
- Possession of a current, valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Strong computer skills, specifically with word processing and spreadsheets.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform fieldwork in varying weather conditions.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
