About the role#
Barr Engineering Co. is seeking a structural engineering intern for our Hibbing, Minnesota office for the summer of 2027. You will support our structural engineering group on projects involving hydropower facilities, wind turbine foundations, and industrial processing sites. This role involves a mix of design, analysis, and fieldwork. You will work closely with project managers and engineers to gain hands-on experience in a professional consulting environment.
What you'll do#
- Assist with engineering calculations and modeling for industrial and energy-related structures.
- Prepare engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation.
- Help develop cost estimates for engineering solutions.
- Participate in site visits and inspections to observe construction activities and ensure compliance.
- Use word processing, spreadsheet, and structural engineering software to support project tasks.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in civil engineering.
- Junior or senior standing with at least one full-time semester of coursework remaining after the internship.
- Minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0.
- Completion of at least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
- Possession of a current, valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

- This is a full-time, paid internship based in Hibbing, Minnesota.
- This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, splitting time between the office and a home office.
- You may be required to travel for fieldwork up to 30% of the time.
