About the role#
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is looking for Teaching Assistants to support faculty in the delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses. This is a part-time position requiring 3 hours of work per week. Compensation is $18.40 per hour.
What you'll do#
- Prepare and deliver instructional materials as directed by the instructor.
- Lead discussions, tutorials, and review sessions.
- Hold regular office hours to help students with course material.
- Grade assignments, quizzes, and exams in a timely manner.
- Maintain records of student performance and attendance.
- Assist with test administration and proctoring.
- Provide feedback to the instructor regarding student progress.
- Participate in required training and meetings.
- Uphold academic integrity policies and department standards.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program at American University, preferably in Mathematics, Statistics, or Data Science.
- Strong academic performance and subject knowledge.
- Completion of the course you are assisting with, plus at least one subsequent course in that subject.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time well.
- A commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
- Prior teaching or tutoring experience is helpful but not required.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Washington, DC, on the East Campus.
- Work may be performed on-site, remotely, or in a hybrid mode depending on course requirements.
- This position is open only to currently enrolled American University students.
