    About the role#

    New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) is responsible for the programs that help new students and their families transition to American University. The Graduate Assistant for Orientation reports to the Associate Director for Orientation. You will work with the team to plan and execute orientation programs for the fall and spring semesters. This is a part-time, on-site role requiring 20 to 35 hours per week depending on the time of year.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist with the design, logistics, and implementation of Orientation Leader training.
    • Coordinate outreach to campus partners for training and the New Eagle Essentials webinar series.
    • Manage the summer webinar series from start to finish, including content design, registration, and assessment.
    • Oversee Off-Campus Excursions for new students, including planning and day-of logistics.
    • Create an engaging social media presence for orientation programs.
    • Maintain records for the Flight Ready! Canvas course, tracking student engagement and attendance.
    • Represent the NSFP office at various campus events throughout the year.
    • Support additional orientation services and programs as needed.

    What you'll need#

    • A bachelor's degree and current enrollment in a master's or doctoral program at American University.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking experience.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Demonstrated experience creating social media content.
    • Experience in orientation or student activities in higher education is preferred.
    • Experience monitoring and analyzing social media performance is preferred.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Main Campus, Washington, DC.
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Hours: 20 hours per week during the academic year, increasing to 27 hours in the summer and up to 35 hours during peak times.
    • Schedule: Requires occasional evening and weekend hours, including support for weekend programming during the first six weeks of the semester.
